We Are Seeking Progress

Behaviourism was a treatment most employed in the 1970's to enable people to handle their anxiety problem in a better way.

It had varying degrees of success! With some sufferers, an understanding of the way the nervous system worked was of great benefit, because at least they could then comprehend the source of the many frightening symptoms, due to an increase in adrenalin being pumped through their bodies, resulting in such high levels of anxiety.

To this end, Sheila Crichton, arranged a training weekend by a team of behavioural psychologists, to take place in Edinburgh in November, 1976. The help of the press and radio was much appreciated to publicise the event. The team, operating under the name of Stresswatch volunteered their services and offered to come from London if their expenses could be paid.

The weekend was a great success, but of course the team pointed out that they had shown the way and it was up to those attending to form a self-help group and use the techniques learned, to help themselves, and others who would come along at a later date for support.

This was the start of a self-help group in Edinburgh, aimed at sufferers of agoraphobia, panic attacks, social phobia and other stress related illnesses. Sheila ran the group for approximately 20 years, until her sudden death a few years ago.

The group is now a registered charity and has been up and running for 25 years and still continues to be run by sufferers or ex-sufferers of anxiety related problems. The emphasis is on self-help - unfortunately no miracle cure is available - but members are there to support one another on the road to a better quality of life.
